| Janesville Messenger Powerkix Martial Arts Studio started as an idea to open a studio that will teach tradition, respect and family values in an era where the commodities are hard to find. The studio doors officially opened on January 04, 2005 with 12 members supporting what the studio is standing for. Through hard work, keeping to the values and word-of-mouth advertising Powerkix grew steadily and is still growing. Master Paik from Paik’s USA Tae Kwon-Do in Madison supports Powerkix and with his help and knowledge we are building one of the best martial arts studios in this area. His support and help is a very big factor in the success of Powerkix in the past year. On April 02, 2005 Powerkix had its Grand Opening in the form of a small tournament. A lot of members from Paik’s USA Tae Kwon-Do came to Janesville to support Powerkix and the Grand Opening was a BIG success. There were demos from national and state champions in weapons, traditional forms and breaking. This was a showcase of what Powerkix was going to do and stand for in the martial arts community. The Grand opening introduced Powerkix to Janesville and the Rock County area with a bang. In March 2005, 9 members from Powerkix went to compete in the World Martial Arts Games in Columbus, Ohio. This was an international tournament with teams from Jamaica, Tobago, England etc. Between the 9 competitors we won 11 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals & 3 Bronze medals. The following competitors competed; Paul Bauer – Gold in Traditional Forms, Gold in Olympic Sparring & Silver in Point Sparring; Judy Fladhammer – Gold in Traditional Forms & Gold in Olympic Sparring; Robert Scarborough – Gold in Point Sparring & Silver in Olympic Sparring; Nathan Vian – Gold in Point Sparring; Jerry Kincade – Gold in Olympic Sparring; Petrus de Vries – Gold in Traditional Forms & Silver in Point Sparring; Morgan DeVoe – Bronze in Traditional Forms (she competed with a broken hand), Jacob Kincade – Gold in Olympic Sparring; Kayla Scarborough – Bronze in Olympic Sparring andTara Wilmer – Gold in Traditional Forms; Gold in Breaking & Bronze in Weapons Forms. In April 2005, 15 of our members went to a tournament in Verona – The Capitol City Classic – and ALL of them placed in the top 3 places. Most of the competitors from Powerkix competed in Traditional forms and Olympic Sparring. This confirmed that Powerkix will teach tradition but will also ensure that variety with tradition builds a better martial artist and better person overall. This tournament had world, national and state champions competing thus confirming the high standard Powerkix set out to teach and maintain. In October 2005, Powerkix send 7 members to the AKA Grand Nationals to compete in Traditional Forms, Olympic Sparring, Point Sparring & Weapons Forms. The following competitors competed: Paul Bauer – 2nd place in Olympic Sparring; Alex Beebe – 3rd place in Point Sparring, 1st place in Olympic Sparring and 1st place in the Grand Championship in Olympic Sparring; Morgan DeVoe – 1st place in Olympic Sparring; Jacob Kincade – 1st place in Olympic Sparring; Jason Smith – 2nd place in Olympic Sparring; Tara Wilmer – 2nd place in Weapons Forms and 3rd place in Traditional Forms & Petrus de Vries – 3rd place in Traditional Forms and 1st place in Olympic Sparring. After all the tournaments competitors from Powerkix went to I am proud to say that we have 8 International Gold Medalists and 4 National Champions. This all happened in only the 1st year since Powerkix opened its doors for teaching martial arts. I can only see bigger and better things in the future thanks to the members and Master Paik. On November 13, 2005 Powerkix hosted the first major martial arts tournament in Janesville in 20 years at Marshall Middle School, S Pontiac Drive, Janesville. 10 Martial arts studios from all over Wisconsin and Illinois send competitors to this tournament in support. With about 100 competitors this was a major success. Competitors and spectators enjoyed it and Powerkix was complimented with the way the tournament arrangements. This tournament will be hosted annually and we have already started to contact more studios that will support us in making this the very best tournament around. Big trophies were awarded and 9 Grand Champion Cups were up for grabs. The competition was off the highest standard and the competitors from Powerkix again showed their class in placing in the top 3 places with no exception. During the past year Powerkix had black belt and color belt testing under supervision of Master Paik. The testing for various belt colors is very important to each and every member since this is a way to measure what improvement a member made before going to the next belt ranking. Since testing is so important members are not allowed to just register for testing, they have to go through some vigorous training while still having fun to help build a good martial artist and a good individual. (picture of some of the kids that tested – front row: Emma Dedrick, Marshall Penn & Timothy Budig; Back row: Lindsay Helgeson, Vincent Lu & Irvin Lu and black belt testing - Mr. De Vries, Morgan DeVoe, & Master Paik). We were also visited by a 10th degree Grandmaster – Dr. Paik – from Burbank, California in December 2005. This was a big privilidge for us at Powerkix since there are only a very few 10th degree Grandmaster alive in the world. Grandmaster Paik is highly skilled in various forms of martial arts like Kung-Fu, Karate, Tai-Chi, Hapkido, Tae Kwon-Do etc. and he help us with some pointers on training techniques and more. It was a very good experience for all of us. We hope to attain more of Grandmaster Paik’s knowledge to help all of us grow as martial artists. (picture of Grandmaster Paik with some of the members from Powerkix) At Powerkix we teach Tae kwon-Do, Karate (Okinawa style), Kung-Fu and plan to start Tai-Chi and Yoga classes soon. We also do one-on-one teaching to help our members achieve the highest level of the art that they can achieve. All people who are interested in joining our program can contact Mr. De Vries at (608) 741-5499 (KIXX) and make arrangements for an appointment. All thanks to Master Paik for his support and tutelage. Powerkix want to thank all the instructors – Judy Fladhammer; Shawn Fladhammer; Jerry Kincade and Matt Bailey and assistant instructors – Alex Beebe, Morgan DeVoe; Jacob Kincade & Jason Smith for their help and support in making the first year a year to remember and to build a solid future on. Last and most important thank you to all the members for their support. |
